A personal message from the producer of Tiki Kon

Aloha, friends!

If we haven't met, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Greg, and I'm the producer of Tiki Kon. For the past two years, I've donated my time and poured my heart into this event and supporting the Northwest Tiki community. Now I need your help to support a great cause that's near to my heart and affects many members in our group. We have less than two weeks to meet our fundraising goal!

On June 21, the longest day of the year, the Alzheimer's Association is holding their all-day fundraising event, The Longest Day. Team Tiki Kon has signed up to participate, and our goal is to raise $1,600. It's like a walk-a-thon, except we get to create our own activities, and they go from sunrise to sunset. Please consider making a tax-deductible pledge to our team and helping us meet our goal. Even the smallest contribution helps

Just days after last summer's Tiki Kon, my grandmother passed away after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's. Over ten years, I watched my dear tutu (that's Hawaiian for grandmother) slowly deteriorate from being a strong, independent woman who brought me souvenirs from Hawaii ever year, to a bedridden, feeble husk of her former self. It was a miserable, slow death that was heartbreaking to watch, and even more so as she slipped into dementia and no longer recognized her loving family members.

Tiki Kon chooses a charity to support each year, and this year I selected the Alzheimer's Association in memory of my grandmother. If you've lost someone to Alzheimer's, or know someone who has, please honor their memory by supporting this very worthy organization.

Thank you!

--Greg Clapp, Tiki Kon Producer

Tiki Kon to support Alzheimer's Association with The Longest Luau, June 21

PORTLAND, OR (April 21, 2014) — Tiki Kon, the Pacific Northwest's Polynesian-Pop extravaganza, is supporting Alzheimer's Association this year by participating in The Longest Day, with an all-day fundraising event called The Longest Luau, on June 21, 2014.

From the Alzheimer Association website:

"On The Longest Day, teams around the world come together to honor the strength, passion and endurance of those facing Alzheimer's with a day of activity. Held on the summer solstice, June 21, 2014, this event calls on participants to raise funds and awareness to advance the efforts of the Alzheimer's Association."
As part of this all-day, nation-wide event, Tiki Kon is hosting a series of luau-themed activities at locations around Portland for its registered team members. To enjoy these members-only activities, members of the Portland Tiki community are encouraged to sign up using the Team Tiki Kon page on the Alzheimer's website.

To reward the efforts of the fundraising team, the member who receives the most pledges will be awarded a grand trophy--a commemorative, super limited-edition 2014 Tiki Kon mug by VanTiki and Munktiki.

Additional public events are planned at two of Portland's top tiki bars, including "extra-happy" hour at Hale Pele and a finale party at Trader Vic's Portland. Everyone is welcome to attend, and members of other Longest Day teams are invited to join Team Tiki Kon for our end-of-day sunset celebration at Trader Vic's. A portion of bar sales will be contributed to the team, which means that guests can support the cause by simply raising a glass with us. Supporters may also make a tax-deductible online donation to the team.

SATAN'S PILGRIMS to Headline Tiki Kon Kickoff Party, presented by Deadhead Rum

PORTLAND, OR (April 3, 2014) —— Tiki Kon is ridiculously pleased to announce the lineup for the Friday night kickoff party for Tiki Kon: Mysteries of the Deep. Headlining the show is legendary surf band SATAN'S PILGRIMS, presented by Deadhead Rum, with special guests LUSHY from Seattle, burlesque performances by Megan Mayhem and Tana the Tattooed Lady, plus DJ Drew Groove. The show will be held Friday, July 11, at the Star Theater in Portland. General admission tickets go on sale to the public Wednesday, April 9, at 10:00 a.m., but Tiki Kon guests may reserve theirs early by purchasing a weekend event pass.

Twisting their name from the 60s B-movie Satan's Sadists, Satan's Pilgrims is one of the most influential surf instrumental bands in the nation. While much of their sound has a definite Southern California flair, their Pacific Northwest rock 'n' roll ancestry sets them apart. The Pilgrims have created their own sub-genre of surf music with a patented haunted sound, which fans have dubbed "Pilgrim Rock." Ask any West Coast surf band to name their influences, and Satan's Pilgrims will inevitably be in the list.

From Seattle, Lushy brings a refreshing groove and intriguing style that blends original samples and Bossa beats with elements of vintage Latin jazz, exotica, surf, new wave and sixties pop. Their distinctive, inter-continental sound is lounge-y and danceable and goes down nice and easy, like a well-mixed cocktail in swanky bar.

Deadhead Rum is an exceptional, six-year cask aged rum imported from Veracruz by Iconic Brands. It debuted in Oregon last year during Tiki Kon: Adventure Island and was featured on the Tiki Kon home bar tour with much acclaim. This year Deadhead returns not only to the home bar tour, but also as the presenter of the Friday night kickoff party.

The Satan's Pilgrims show is part of Tiki Kon weekend, which runs Friday through Sunday, July 11-13. Most of the entertainment and activities are held at the Red Lion at the Quay, in Vancouver, right across the bridge from Portland. A hotel shuttle to the Star Theater will be available for Tiki Kon guests. Shuttle fare is included in Tiki Kon weekend passes or available for purchase on board.

Weekend event passes and information are available at the Tiki Kon website. Satan's Pilgrims tickets may be purchased separately from Ticket Biscuit starting April 9th, or are included in the VIP Package or Weekend Pass.

Passes and VIP Packages On Sale Sunday, March 23

PORTLAND, OR (March 19, 2014) — Tiki Kon, the Pacific Northwest's Polynesian pop extravaganza, has announced that passes and VIP Packages for the 2014 event will go on sale Sunday, March 23, at 12:00 Noon PST, along with the launch of the full event website.

Tiki Kon resurfaces this July 11-13, at the Red Lion at the Quay in Vancouver, Washington. All Saturday activities are on-site at the hotel. However, the Friday night kickoff show, with a high-profile headline act (TBA), will be hosted at the Star Theater in downtown Portland. As usual, the signature Tiki Kon Sunday brunch and home bar tour will be hosted at a number of locations in Portland, with "yellow submarine" event buses departing from the Red Lion.

Breaking from the tradition of recent years, the Friday night kickoff party is being hosted off-site, with shuttle service provided for hotel guests. "The Quay is a great weekend base for us, but we've got a lot of guests coming in from out of town who want to see Portland nightlife," says event producer Greg Clapp. "Hosting the show at the Star Theater gets us into downtown for the evening. It's a beautiful, intimate venue with a long history of silent films and burlesque. It's a perfect spot for the amazing show we've got planned."

This year's ticketing options include full-weekend passes, as well as day/night passes for Saturday activities and shows. Pass holders may add the Sunday bar tour as an add-on. A VIP "Super Package" is also offered for the most passionate tiki fans, which includes weekend admission, dining, the signature Tiki Kon Home Bar Tour, a selection of limited-edition event merchandise, VIP gift bag, and access to exclusive VIP lounges on Friday and Saturday nights.

Admission to most shows and presentations will be available on an individual basis or at the door, for guests who only want to attend a single show and don't wish to purchase a pass or package. However, the passes provide the best value and convenience for guests. Only pass sales will open this Sunday. Details about individual ticket sales will be announced as soon as they're available.

Weekend passholders, even those from the Portland area, are encouraged to stay at the Red Lion and make a mini vacation getaway of the event. Special event rates start at $89/night for a single or double queen room. Lodging information and reservation links will be available on the Tiki Kon website when it launches on Sunday, and may also be found on the event blog.

The 2014 Tiki Kon website features illustrations by Hawaii-based VanTiki. In addition to event artwork, VanTiki is also sculpting this year's commemorative tiki mug in collaboration with Munktiki, is producing a special limited edition tiki pendant for VIP guests, and will be vending on-site at the event.

Tiki Kon 2014 Call for Vendors

PORTLAND, OR (March 7, 2014) — Tiki Kon, the Pacific Northwest's Polynesian pop extravaganza, has released its 2014 Vendor Kit and is accepting vendor applications for this year's event. The organizers seek unique, high quality, non-food products that fit the event's themes of tiki culture, undersea adventure, tropical climates, nautical ephemera, and vintage fashion and design. The deadline to apply is May 15, 2014.

The Tiki Kon event is held at the Red Lion at the Quay, in Vancouver, Washington, July 11-13, 2014. Since some of the activities take guests off-property on Friday and Sunday, all vending occurs on Saturday, July 12. A weekend's worth of vending is compressed into a single day, allowing vendors to relax and enjoy the rest of the festivities.

Sellers have the option of setting up shop in the Island Marketplace, in the hotel's main ballroom during the day, or signing up for room vending in one of the premium rooms that encircle the Saturday night main stage. Mobile vending is also offered for vendors whose products are small and easily carried, like cigarette girls in nightclubs.

Vending at Tiki Kon is a great opportunity for artists, craftsmen and small businesses to promote themselves, drive sales and interact with customers in a new and exciting way. This year's event is sure to draw a larger crowd of shoppers than ever, and vending space is limited. Applications are reviewed and accepted by a panel of Tiki Kon organizers, with criteria that includes relevance to event themes, quality, uniqueness, presentation, the order in which they are received.

Marci Holcomb and Austin Jordan of Sputnik Housewares have come on board as Vendor Coordinators for the 2014 season. This dynamic team has been vending their vintage tiki-themed housewares at Tiki Kon and other events for years, and they bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Now in its 12th year, Tiki Kon began as a private home bar crawl and has grown to become the Northwest’s most enjoyable tiki weekender. Each year in July, enthusiastic tiki fans converge to socialize, dance, party, shop, indulge and celebrate their love of tropical climates, Hawaiian shirts, cocktails and music. It's three days of music, fashion, art, dance, classic cars, vendors, seminars, cocktails, parties and more. Tickets go on sale in Spring, 2014.
